As Principal in Charge and Lead Designer at Bothwell Site Design, Dorothy guided this minimal budget project in collaboration with Katie Winter Architect. Working with the existing conditions of a completely overgrown site, a creative play area for the students of the Immaculate Conception School used off-the-shelf and repurposed site materials. By mounding over a remnant pool structure and exposing its coping, we reutilized an existing structure to create an unexpected play element. Logs from the site were reused to create a flexible space amphitheater, used both for play and study. Astrological patterns built with round pavers set in bluestone screenings, created opportunity to uncover, recover and provide moments of non-prescribed discovery. The materials were carefully chosen to reveal the site’s history and to create new stories.
