As Principal in Charge and Lead Designer at Bothwell Site Design, Dorothy led in the design of this project in Weston, Connecticut. The addition of a 2 car garage to an existing free-standing 3 car garage prompted the redesign of the site, including a courtyard space, two terraces at the lower level, and planting. The new design works with the complex geometries of the house, integrating the house with the landscape. Removal of invasive trees on a hillside and replanting native trees and shrubs helps to reestablish a the hillside and contributes to the extensive site planting.
The design of the courtyard creates a pedestrian scale to the large garage building. The bluestone walkways connect the front door, the garage and the stairs to Crystal Lake. Two radial terraces separated by planting strengthen the relationship to the house. A native grass edge at the lake filters runoff and creates healthier habitat.
